Open government trainings in Colby, Garden City canceled

Release Date: Aug 17, 2018

TOPEKA – (August 17, 2018) – Due to lack of interest, the open government training sessions scheduled for next week in Colby and Garden City have been canceled. The attorney general’s office and the Sunshine Coalition for Open Government, which were jointly sponsoring the trainings, determined that too few people had expressed interest in attending to justify the expense of providing the trainings. Only eight total attendees had registered for the two sessions.

The now-canceled trainings had been scheduled to take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

Interest has been greater in training sessions scheduled for Wichita and Fredonia on Thursday and Friday, and they will proceed as scheduled:

Thursday, August 23

9 a.m. – Noon

Wichita State University, Marcus Welcome Center
1845 Fairmount St., Wichita

Friday, August 24

1:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Fredonia Public Library, Lafferty Community Meeting Room
807 Jefferson St., Fredonia

Additional training sessions in Topeka and Johnson County are being planned and will be announced in the coming weeks.

Participants can register for the Wichita or Fredonia sessions on the Kansas Attorney General’s website, www.ag.ks.gov/open-gov, or by calling (785) 296-2215.

The training about the Kansas Open Records Act and the Kansas Open Meetings Act will be conducted by attorneys in Schmidt’s office who have experience in open government laws and who are charged by law with training and enforcement of them. Panelists will include Kansas Sunshine Coalition members, local government officials and media representatives.
