Internet Strangers
We never know who we're talking to on the Internet. People can lie about their age, name, and much more. These online strangers can be very dangerous, but you can learn how to be safe.
What's the Big Deal?
Strangers can use the Internet to hurt kids and make them feel bad. It is easy because on the Internet, people can change their names, age, and location to fit in with a group. We never know who we might be talking to.
What Should You Do
- Be aware of dangerous situations. If a stranger sends you a message or asks you to keep a "special secret," it could be a dangerous situation. Say no and tell a trusted adult.
- Trust your instincts. If the Internet stranger makes you feel scared or uncomfortable, tell a trusted adult right away.
- Know what to do. If you're playing online and a stranger sends you a message or asks to meet you, say no and tell a trusted adult.
- Ask your parents first. If a stranger invites you to go somewhere, offers you a gift, or just wants to talk, say you need to ask your parents for permission first.
- Never meet an Internet stranger or even a friend you met on the Internet in real life. If they ask you to, tell an adult.
- Stick with friends. It's always safer to chat with friends you know in real life. Strangers online are bad news.
