Youth Services
The Youth Services Division, established in 2023, is committed to enhancing the safety and well-being of Kansas children. The division oversees several key programs designed to safeguard youth, including the State Child Death Review Board, the Statewide Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Program, and Youth Suicide Prevention. Together, these initiatives focus on preventing harm to Kansas youth and supporting their long-term success.
Youth Services Programs and Goals
Kansas Child Death Review Board (SCDRB)
The State Child Death Review Board is tasked with reviewing the deaths of all Kansas children, from birth to 17 years old, including Kansas residents who pass away outside the state. By identifying patterns, trends, and risk factors, the Board seeks to understand the circumstances surrounding each fatality. The ultimate goal of the SCDRB is to reduce child fatalities across Kansas by informing preventive efforts and public safety initiatives.
Statewide Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Program
The Kansas Attorney General’s Office sponsors and coordinates the statewide D.A.R.E. program, which has been a vital part of Kansas communities for over 25 years. Established by the legislature in 1999, the Statewide D.A.R.E. Coordinator works alongside School Resource Officers, local law enforcement, educational institutions, and communities to promote drug resistance education. This collaborative effort between law enforcement, schools, and parents ensures that Kansas youth are equipped to make healthy, informed decisions and stay on the path to success.
Youth Suicide Prevention
Our mission is to eliminate deaths by suicide among Kansas youth. Through the identification, creation, and support of youth suicide awareness and prevention efforts across the state, we aim to foster safe environments for children and adolescents. The Youth Suicide Prevention Coordinator works with local communities, schools, and organizations to ensure effective resources and support are available statewide.
