Concealed Carry Licensing

In 2006 the Kansas Legislature passed the Personal and Family Protection Act. Since July 2006, more than 143,000 Kansans have applied for concealed carry licenses. The first licenses were issued on January 3, 2007.

The Office of the Attorney General offers the following information to help Kansans and visitors better follow the Kansas concealed carry law. If you have additional questions, call the Concealed Carry Licensing Unit at (785) 291-3765 or send us an email.

Effective July 1, 2023, the application fee provided by law is $32.50 payable to the Sheriff of the applicant's county of residence, and the fee to the Office of the Attorney General is reduced to $0.

The minimum age to apply for a concealed carry handgun license is 18 years of age.

Note: Due to high volumes of applications being received, processing times are currently 8-12 weeks for both new and renewal applications. Thank you for your patience as we work through our backlog.

License Renewal Information

A renewal notice will be mailed to the licensee’s address at least 90 days before expiration. Licensees who have failed to notify the Attorney General of an address change will likely not receive a renewal notice and may be subject to a fine. The Attorney General will not attempt to locate licensees whose mail is returned as undeliverable.

Renewal applications are not available online or on the Attorney General’s website. Please contact the Concealed Carry Licensing Unit at (785) 291-3765 if you need a renewal application.

The renewal process will be as follows:

  • Licensees will receive a renewal notice and an application form with instructions 90 days prior to expiration.
  • The application form must be filled out, notarized, and sent by certified mail to the Attorney General.  Licensees may opt to hand deliver their notarized renewal applications to the Attorney General’s Office (in Topeka) in lieu of certified mail.
  • The completed renewal application must include a current 2x2 inch photo of the licensee and a copy of the licensee’s driver's license or ID card. Effective July 1, 2023, the fee to renew a license is reduced to $0.
  • License renewals do not require training, and licensees do not submit their applications through their county sheriff or provide another set of fingerprints.
  • Licensees will be subjected to a criminal history background check prior to renewal.
  • Once approved, licensees will be mailed a notice of approval to renew their license. The notice of approval must be taken to a Kansas Driver’s License Station for issuance. Licenses will be renewed for 4 years from the date of expiration.
  • RENEW PROMPTLY!  Failure to submit a renewal application prior to expiration will result in a lapse in licensure. Effective July 1, 2023, there is no fee for late renewal.
  • Licenses are considered permanently expired 6 months after the expiration date.  Holders of a permanently expired license must submit a new application pursuant to K.S.A. 75-7c05.

Information for Active Duty Military Personnel

Considerations before applying for a Kansas concealed carry handgun license (CCHL):

  • Effective July 1, 2015, persons who are 21 years of age or older may carry concealed firearms in Kansas without a license if they are lawful to possess firearms in general. This applies to active duty military personnel and their dependents.
  • Effective July 1, 2021, persons who are 18 years of age or older may carry concealed firearms in Kansas if they are lawful to possess firearms AND have a valid concealed carry license.
  • A non-Kansas CCHL is valid in Kansas so long as the licensee is not a resident of Kansas and the CCHL is not expired, revoked, suspended or otherwise had arbitrary action taken against it by the issuing jurisdiction. Active duty military personnel and their dependents with valid non-resident driver’s licenses and a valid non-Kansas CCHL are lawful to continue carrying concealed in Kansas without a Kansas CCHL.

Considerations when applying for the Kansas CCHL:

  • Non-resident active duty military and their dependents residing in Kansas are eligible to apply for a Kansas CCHL.  While active duty military personnel and their dependents must attach a copy of their non-resident driver's license or state-issued ID card to their application, they do not have to surrender their non-resident driver's license or ID to Kansas.
  • A Kansas CCHL is only valid while the licensee is a resident of Kansas or stationed in Kansas as active duty military or a dependent thereof. Unless Kansas is the person’s home of record, active duty military personnel and their dependents with nonresident driver’s licenses must surrender their Kansas CCHL when relocating outside of this state.
  • Generally, applicants must complete the Kansas-required 8-hour training class, pay the fees, and submit their application through the Sheriff in the county where they reside. Persons may qualify for an exemption from the Kansas training class if they have a valid CCHL from another jurisdiction and the training they used to obtain that non-Kansas CCHL meets or exceeds the training required by Kansas.  The applicant, whether active duty military or one of their dependents, must attach: (1) a copy of the valid non-Kansas CCHL to their application; (2) any documentation showing the contents of the training which was used to obtain that non-Kansas CCHL; and (3) certification that they successfully completed the non-Kansas training course.
