Trial Assistant, Criminal Division - Major Crimes

The Office of the Kansas Attorney General (OAG) is seeking applications to fill a Trial Assistant position in the Major Crimes unit of the Criminal Division to perform paraprofessional legal and clerical work, where working a team environment with a positive attitude and willingness to assist others, is critical. We seek to hire individuals who exemplify the highest standards of integrity, efficiency and professionalism. This position requires excellent organizational skills.

PRIMARY DUTIES: If selected, you would support our mission to better protect the safety and security of Kansans by assisting our attorneys through the performance of the following duties. Most cases include homicides, off-grid child sex crimes, and felony crimes involving public officials.

  • Assist in drafting, proofreading and filing legal documents in connection with criminal proceedings in state courts
  • Arrange travel and prepare travel vouchers for prosecutors and/or witnesses
  • Maintain calendar with activities of each assigned case
  • Coordinate and conduct witness support activities that include preparing subpoenas and scheduling witnesses for motion and trial preparation
  • Coordinate with Victim/Witness Specialist to notify victims or their family members concerning court activities
  • Assist attorneys in preparation and execution of trial-related litigation, including distributing discovery, coordinating sequence of witnesses, preparing trial notebooks (exhibit list, etc.) and obtaining prepared demonstrative exhibits
  • Assist attorney during trial with coordination, which may include some travel
  • Maintain and update our electronic document management system (LawBase) and scan documents for electronic storage
  • Manage case documents within case management system (iManage)
  • Process incoming and outgoing mail, answer incoming calls and respond to emails in a timely manner 
  • Assist other trial assistants and attorneys as needed

Attorneys

Attorneys employed with the OAG are designated as Deputy Attorneys General, Assistant Attorneys General, or similar. Our attorneys specialize in the practice of various fields of law including administrative, antitrust, civil litigation, criminal litigation, employment, and environmental to name just a few.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited law school
  • Admission to and membership in good standing with the Bar of the Supreme Court of Kansas
  • Admission to or eligibility for admission to the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas and U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit

Special Agents

Commissioned law enforcement personnel who conduct civil and/or criminal investigations and perform other law enforcement duties.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current or past full-time law enforcement certification
  • Three (3) years of law enforcement experience

Investigators

Civilian personnel who gather information, conduct interviews and manage a caseload of civil matters or complaints. No law enforcement duties are associated with these positions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in business administration, communications, criminal justice, or related field(s)
  • Related professional or technical experience may be substituted for the required college study

Information Technology (IT)

IT is critical to the efficient and effective operations of the OAG. Areas of specialty include database administration, network monitoring and maintenance, IT security and end-user support.

Administration/Clerical

Administrative and clerical staff are needed to support the mission of the OAG. These include positions such as accountants, legal assistants and clerical positions with increasing levels of complexity and responsibility. Many of these positions provide support to the administrative, investigative and/or legal functions of the agency.

In accordance with K.S.A. 75-3111 and K.S.A. 75-2935(1)(j), officers and employees in the OAG are in the unclassified service of the Kansas Civil Service Act. Unclassified positions are not subject to the entitlements provided to employees in the classified service as defined by the Kansas Civil Service Act. Employees of the OAG serve at the pleasure of the Attorney General and are terminable at-will.
