The Office of the Kansas Attorney General (OAG) is seeking applications to fill a Trial Assistant position in the Major Crimes unit of the Criminal Division to perform paraprofessional legal and clerical work, where working a team environment with a positive attitude and willingness to assist others, is critical. PRIMARY DUTIES: If selected, you would support our mission to better protect the safety and security of Kansans by assisting our attorneys through the performance of the following duties. Most cases include homicides, off-grid child sex crimes, and felony crimes involving public officials.
- Assist in drafting, proofreading and filing legal documents in connection with criminal proceedings in state courts
- Arrange travel and prepare travel vouchers for prosecutors and/or witnesses
- Maintain calendar with activities of each assigned case
- Coordinate and conduct witness support activities that include preparing subpoenas and scheduling witnesses for motion and trial preparation
- Coordinate with Victim/Witness Specialist to notify victims or their family members concerning court activities
- Assist attorneys in preparation and execution of trial-related litigation, including distributing discovery, coordinating sequence of witnesses, preparing trial notebooks (exhibit list, etc.) and obtaining prepared demonstrative exhibits
- Assist attorney during trial with coordination, which may include some travel
- Maintain and update our electronic document management system (LawBase) and scan documents for electronic storage
- Manage case documents within case management system (iManage)
- Process incoming and outgoing mail, answer incoming calls and respond to emails in a timely manner
- Assist other trial assistants and attorneys as needed
