The Office of the Kansas Attorney General is seeking aggressive-but-thoughtful appellate litigators to work with his Solicitor General to take on some of the most interesting and important legal issues the office handles. The Solicitor General’s Office has two main responsibilities: (1) representing Kansas’ interests in civil and criminal appeals in state and federal courts, and (2) researching and drafting formal Attorney General Opinions requested by state officers. Assistant Solicitors also occasionally appear in trial courts for habeas suits and other quasi-appellate proceedings.

An attorney in this division must have exceptional writing and research skills. Strategic vision, political savvy, and a desire to “think deep thoughts” about the law are likewise necessary. The successful candidate will be able to quickly see the second- and third-order effects of his or her legal arguments, both in a particular case and in the development of the law more broadly.
