Cherokee County man guilty of child sex crimes

COLUMBUS – (April 8, 2014) – A Cherokee County man today pleaded guilty to six counts of child sex crimes, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said.

Stanley W. Pickering, 79, Baxter Springs, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated criminal sodomy, four counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and one count of aggravated indecent solicitation of a child. Two of the counts were charged under provisions of Jessica’s Law, carrying a potential sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years.

Judge Kurtis Loy accepted the pleas in Cherokee County District Court. Sentencing is scheduled for June 2 at 1:30 p.m.

The case was investigated by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Assistant Attorney General Christine Ladner of Schmidt’s office is prosecuting the case.
