Valley Falls man found guilty of mistreatment of an elder person

Release Date: Jul 26, 2019

OSKALOOSA – (July 26, 2019) – A Valley Falls man has been found guilty of mistreatment of an elder person, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said.

Benjamin Wayne Thompson, 42, pleaded no contest yesterday in Jefferson County District Court to one felony count of mistreatment of an elder person. The case stemmed from an investigation by the Department for Children and Families and the Valley Falls Police Department, which revealed that Thompson, through a power of attorney agreement, gained access to an elder person’s financial resources and used those resources for himself. Thompson agreed to pay $99,877.94 in restitution to the victim as well as a $2,500 fine as part of his sentencing.

District Judge Gary Nafziger took the plea, and sentencing has been scheduled for September 5 at 10:30 a.m.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorneys General Stacy Edwards and Jon Noble of Schmidt’s office.
