TOPEKA – (May 31, 2018) – Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt issued the following statement in response to today’s ruling by Shawnee County District Court Judge Teresa L. Watson that current Kansas law requires candidates for governor and lieutenant governor to be residents of Kansas:
“We appreciate the court's impartial assessment clarifying the law. Today's judgment confirms that our reading of the law is correct: Current law requires candidates for governor and lieutenant governor of Kansas to reside in Kansas.”
Schmidt filed the lawsuit in April to seek clarification from the courts on the residency question before the ballot is set and the votes for governor are cast.
