AG Derek Schmidt: Facebook responds to states’ inquiry about data privacy

Release Date: May 08, 2018

TOPEKA – (May 8, 2018) – In response to a letter from 37 state and territorial attorneys general, Facebook has provided information to the states regarding its data privacy policies, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said today.

In a letter dated May 7, Facebook provided a response to issues raised in the letter sent by the attorneys general in March. Facebook also disclosed that more than 647,000 Kansans may have had their information improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica and other third parties. Approximately 2,700 Kansas users who had installed the “thisisyourdigitallife” application on their accounts were affected. That action then granted additional access to more than 645,000 other Kansas users who were friends of those who had installed the application.

"The information provided by Facebook will be helpful to state attorneys general in assessing the situation," Schmidt said.

The attorneys general had written to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in March asking to provide answers to several specific questions on Facebook’s policies and procedures in response to the recent news reports regarding the company’s business practices and privacy protections.
