Chanute man sentenced to life in prison for Jessica’s Law charges

Release Date: May 26, 2016

BURLINGTON – (May 26, 2016) – A Chanute man was sentenced today to life in prison for three counts of rape of a person under 14 years of age, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said.

William D. Joyce, 33, of Chanute, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for at least 75 years for three counts of rape. The defendant will also serve lifetime post release supervision. Joyce was found guilty of all three charges by a Coffey County jury in April. The charges fall under Jessica’s Law, because the victim was under 14 years of age. Judge Phillip M. Fromme presided over the sentencing in Coffey County District Court.

The crimes were committed in April and May 2007. The charges stemmed from an investigation by the Coffey County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant Attorney General Melissa Johnson of Schmidt’s office prosecuted the case.
